My team at the beginning of the 2009 fantasy football season.

Once again it’s the beginning of fantasy football season, and this year I was able to wrangle up a pretty respectable team including Forte, Rodgers, White and Royal. I have more than one team, but I pay the most attention to the team you can see to the left. Some of the people I selected are obvious choices.

I was forth in the draft, so Matt Forte was the most obvious selection, and I’m interested to see what he can do now that the Bears have a real quarterback. Roddy White was an amazing young receiver last year, and I expect him to get better for this season. I was happy to snag Steve Slaton and Larry Johnson as my second and third running backs.

I think people are going to be surprised with Johnson this year. He had a bad season last year, but you can’t forget about a running back when they’ve had one bad season (the same can be said for Tomlinson).

One of the sleepers of the draft this year is Eddie Royal. He’s been taken off of some of his kick return duties, because they expect to use him more in the receiving game. If Brandon Marshall continues to stay at home, you can be sure that Royal is going to be a top-tier receiver.

Green Bay is a sneaky defense. While they don’t get as many stops and give up more points than the top defenses, they more than made up for it with touchdown interceptions last year.

For independent defensive players, I ignored how effective they were on defense. Since the league gives respectable points for kick returns, I made sure to draft players that could possibly make an impact on special teams. Always make sure to look at how points are scored in the league and draft accordingly, sometimes it can give you an edge.

It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out this year. Some years of fantasy football have a lot of players who are guaranteed to score a lot of points. There aren’t very many of those players this year, so it’ll take a few weeks before things start to develop.
