This Irish Red doesn't have any major flaws, it's just very mellow. Overall a 6/10.

Sweet in and front and bitter in the back, the Sam Adams Irish Red Ale has a little bit of both. When you first take a swig of the brew, it gives off a sweet caramel flavor, but the finish has a bit of bitterness. There’s a small respectable head when you pour the beer that leaves slight lacing as you drink it down.

The aroma is sweet and a little malty. You won’t get any hoppy noted until you swallow the beer. It’s pleasant for hopheads like me, just nothing special.

The Irish Red is nice and smooth. It’d be easy the throw back three or four of these without realizing it until it was too late. With an ABV of 5.5 percent, you’ll feel them if you have a few, but you dont’ need to worry about getting wasted.

If you’re looking for something really unique, you may want to look elsewhere. If you’re just looking for something decent to have with dinner, you may want to give this stuff a try.

  • Look – 8: It looks very good with a deep reddish brown color, just like an Irish red ale should be.
  • Aroma – 7: The aroma is mostly malty, but there’s also a little bit of the caramel that comes through in the taste. If you were expecting hoppiness, you’ll be disappointed.
  • Feel – 7: The feel is medium to a little but more than medium, which is helped along by the malt that went into the brew.
  • ABV – 5.5: This beer is 5.5 percent alcohol by volume.
  • Taste – 6: This is a tasty beer that a lot of people will enjoy, but it’s very mild.
  • OVERALL – 6.5: This is a good beer if you’re in the mood for something mellow and easy to drink. It’s smooth, but maybe a little too smooth for some.
